Last class, we had a great presentation from Jesse Miller about Privacy and Safety on the internet. He also talked about the usage of cell phones, and the need to educate our future students and kids on balance with them. The one thing that I never even thought about is that kids learn from what they see, parents and society not being able to go anywhere without their cell phone and not being able to wait in a line or ride a bus without being glued to it these actions will be copied once they have their own cell phone. We have to teach the kids to balance, with being able to leave your cellphone at home, or not always being stuck looking at it the minute you have ‘nothing’ to do.
We need to educate students on digital literacy, digital rights, and digital identity because it will be prevalent in their life. This presentation reminded me of the past week’s Creative Commons License because you have to know what information you can use, and use it correctly, including citation’s so there is no plagiarizing. And with digital identity realizing who you are on the internet, who do you want to be portrayed as, and with what social media platforms.
I found it interesting when he was talking about future job opportunities, and how some past teachers have texted their students rather than an email. This is a very inappropriate way of getting into contact, and it is a great reminder never to do so. The internet is a great big world, and it is important as future educators to make sure that our appearance on it is appropriate. We were told to Google our name and see what comes up, was there anything you did not like such as a photo of myself drinking, thankfully no, but it allowed me to be more aware of privacy settings. I currently am not on Facebook or Twitter, but I do have Instagram, I have my account private because I do not want those photos to be out on the internet.
I challenge you, the reader, to Google your name and see what you can see!
