Today I listened to a very short Soundcloud by Yale University who consulted Dr. Clark, a physical therapist.
I wanted to summarize what I learned, but I have also attached the SoundCloud to allow you the ability to listen to it.
As mentioned before stretching is important to maintain muscle length and flexibility. Dr. Clark discusses the importance of stretching before an activity and after.
Before an activity:
- It is important to stretch to warm up the muscles
- You want to hold the stretch for 5-10 seconds
- You want to focus on active motion, also known as dynamic stretching (example: Jogging on the spot before a run)
After an activity:
- Stretching after allows for the muscle to cool down and lengthen
- You want to be holding the stretch for 15-30 seconds
- This type of stretching is called static stretching
Important to know:
When holding a stretch you do not want to feel that you are in pain. You should feel uncomfortable while holding the stretch, but at the same time stretching is meant to be relaxing and you should be able to hold it in the position.
Updates from the last blog:
I have successfully created a routine of stretching in the morning, which has been a lovely way to start the day. As well, I made sure through the many hours I spend on Zoom and at my desk that I am taking breaks to stretch.
